Casino terms often describe different parts of the same round. A payout is not necessarily a profit, a natural is not every total of 21, and turnover is not a starting balance. This glossary connects the terms used across our free practice games and probability tools with short examples.
Casino terms for credits and returns
| Term | Plain meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stake | Units committed to one round | A 2-credit spin uses 2 credits |
| Gross return | Everything returned after settlement | A 10-credit return can include stake |
| Net result | Return minus stake | 10 returned minus 2 staked is +8 |
| Turnover | Sum of all stakes across rounds | 50 rounds at 2 units total 100 |
| Virtual credits | Demonstration units without cash value | They cannot be withdrawn |
| Push | Stake returned with no profit | Equal ordinary blackjack totals push |
The words to one and for one need careful reading. A 2:1 profit payout on one credit earns two credits and returns the original credit as well. A gross multiplier of 2× returns two in total. Those conventions differ by one stake unit. Our tools state which convention they use.
Probability and expectation language
Probability measures the chance of a defined event under a model. A 1/37 roulette straight probability describes one selected pocket on a uniform European wheel. It does not say that the pocket appears once in every block of 37 spins.
Expected value is the probability-weighted average result. It can describe net change or gross return, so check the label. House edge expresses expected player loss as a percentage of a stated stake basis. Return to player, or RTP, describes theoretical gross return as a proportion of that same basis when definitions align.
Variance measures spread around an average. Volatility is a broader term often used for how uneven a game’s payouts are. Neither is identical to edge. Hit frequency describes the proportion of events that return any credits under a defined paytable, not the proportion producing a net profit.
Independent events leave one another’s probabilities unchanged. Without replacement means removed items stay out during sampling. A second card draw without replacement can therefore have different probabilities from the first.
Card-game vocabulary
Hit asks for another blackjack card. Stand ends drawing decisions for that hand. Bust is a blackjack total over 21. A soft hand uses an ace as eleven while remaining at or below 21; a hard hand has no ace currently providing that flexibility.
A blackjack natural is an initial ace and ten-value card. A baccarat natural is an initial two-card 8 or 9. The same word refers to different qualifying conditions in these games. In baccarat, Player and Banker are hand names. A commission is the deduction applied to a winning Banker payout in the standard commission model.
A shoe holds cards for dealing. A deck is one complete card set. Several decks create several copies of each rank and suit combination. Known removed cards change the remaining composition for probability calculations.
Wheel and slot vocabulary
A roulette straight covers one pocket. A dozen covers one named set of twelve numbers. An inside bet covers numbers on the grid, while an outside bet covers a wider labeled set such as red. A zero pocket is outside the ordinary color, odd/even, and low/high selections.
A slot paytable lists qualifying combinations and rewards. A weighted symbol has a specified selection probability that need not match the visible number of symbol types. A reel is the displayed symbol column or the corresponding mathematical selection process. A near-match is not a paying result unless expressly included in the rules.
When a term seems ambiguous, translate it into an event and an arithmetic expression. Ask what qualifies, what gets returned, whether the stake is included, and what assumptions define the probability. Then choose the relevant rules guide or calculator from the related links.
Common questions
Are RTP and house edge opposites?
They sum to 100% when they use the same stake basis and game scope.
Does turnover mean the opening balance?
No. It is the sum of stakes made over the measured rounds.
Is a push a win?
It returns the stake without a profit, so it is a break-even settlement.
